Weeping trees.

January 22, 2008 / by ybgirp

We have a long drive that Hans planted on both sides with Cadagi eucalyptus trees. They are very beautiful with large leaves and jade green trunks, meeting overhead creating a luminous green tunnel from the gate up to the house. Today I noticed wet patches on the drive, so stopped and looked up – receiving drops of water on my face. A type of mealy bug has coated the upper and some lower smaller branches with thick cottonwool like fluff that conceals and protects the bugs inside, which suck on the sap and excrete what they don’t want. The trees are dripping constantly like a light rain so water is running down the drive. it is amazing they can cope. This photo is of one branch and the white ‘fluff’. Apparently after they’ve done whatever they do, they move on and the trees recover – I sure hope so. They’re pretty tough, as well as beautiful – like me.
